Having time to think is a rare commodity in business today. Reading Nancy Kline’s book “Time to Think – Listening to ignite the Human Mind”, I was reminded that it is good listening that determines the quality of our thinking. Add some astute questions, and you have the basic recipe for great coaching.
Studying coaching and behavioural change at Henley Business School has given me the opportunity to take time to listen and reflect on me as well as on my coaching style. This time can be seen as a luxury but is in fact a necessity, applicable to business as well as to everyday life.
Give your team and your family your full attention when they are speaking to you and see how you improve the quality of their thinking. When my teenagers no longer say: “Mum, you’re not listening” is when I’ll know that I am making progress.
